5 Winter Safety Tips for Senior Citizens

Senior Citizen Cardinal PointeThere are many beautiful things about winter–the holidays, snow on the trees, and time with family. But along with the sweet comes the sour–cold weather. Take caution this winter and prepare for the cold with our 5 tips below.

1. Maintain a good diet

Winter might mean you don’t go out to eat at as much, but that shouldn’t stop you from keeping a healthy diet. Fruits, vegetables, and vitamins should still be staple of any diet no matter the weather. A healthy diet is a the easiest way to be assured you maintain optimum strength and energy.

2. Check your rugs

Make sure your rugs are flattened and there aren’t any places for you to trip over. This advice could apply for any season, but it’s especially relevant for Winter, as people wear clunkier shoes. Check where you regularly walk and make sure there aren’t easy fall surfaces.

3. Exercise

Though you may not want to venture for a walk outside, you can still do light exercises indoors. Keep your legs and arms strong by doing simple, light-weight exercises in-doors. If you aren’t working to make yourself stronger, it’s likely your muscles will atrophy. Keeping up your physical health is also one of the easiest ways to keep your mental health sharp.

4. Check your Shoes

Bad or no traction on your shoes is one of the biggest causes of unnecessary falls. With Minnesota winters, you need all the traction you can. Check your shoes, and replace any shoes that don’t have adequate traction.

5. Have a Cell Phone with You

Wherever you go, it’s good to have the ability to call others. While on the road, winter snowstorms can come out of nowhere and leave you stranded. Keep a cell phone with you at all times, just to be safe.

3 Game To Keep Senior Citizens Mentally Sharp

As we age, it’s natural to become slightly forgetful or take longer to remember things. The good news is that we can often slow this process or even partially reverse it. One of the easiest ways to stay mentally fit as you age is through games. Different games often invoke memory, inspire learning, and are great social activities.

1. Card Games. Gin rummy, bridge, hearts, and dozens of other card games are mentally stimulating while usually providing a great social environment. If one can’t find a group to play with, there are always online options like solitaire for card games.

2. Word puzzles. Whether a simple crossword puzzle or Sodoku, puzzles are great at building your mental muscles. Attempt to solve at least one crossword or Sodoku puzzle each day to keep your mental tool sharp. The daily newspaper makes a great resource for crossword puzzles and you can find an infinite number of word puzzles online.

3. Board games. When visiting with grandchildren, a fun activity to enjoy is board games. No matter how difficult or simple a game you choose, a board game is a great way to bond with a grandchild and keep your brain active.

Whether you’re a crossword puzzle enthusiast or just like an occasionally  game of bridge, playing games is a great way to boost your memory and keep your mind in peak condition.

The Benefits of Yoga for Senior Citizens

Yoga is an exercise that’s typically thought of as being reserved for young, trendy people who can bend their bodies into a pretzel. While is it popular with younger crowds, yoga actually offers several benefits to the aging population.

Improved flexibility and stability.

The stretching in Yoga helps bring better balance and stability. The variety of poses help strengthen core muscle groups that may not see as much daily activity as they used to. Using the different muscles can give greater body awareness which in turn can lead to fewer falls.

Improve focus.

Yoga requires concentration and heavy focus. Regularly training your mind to focus increases awareness and helps you in regular every day situations like driving.

Better Sleep

Exercise and movement help give you a better nights rest. After going through light exercise, your body is more relaxed and susceptible to a deeper sleep.

Mental Benefits

Regular exercise helps keep your mind sharp and alert.  Yoga requires a lot of focus and concentration, which stimulates the mind.

With all of the different benefits, yoga can be an easy way for senior citizens to stay healthy and in shape.

How to Stay Safe in the Minnesota Summer Heat

As the Minnesota heat wave carries on, it’s essential to make sure you’re staying safe and cool in the summer heat. Use these simple tips to keep yourself cool and safe during the dog days of summer.

  • Drink plenty of water. Bring a Nalgene or water bottle if you are going on a walk.
  • Wear lightweight, light colored clothes. Light colored clothes will keep you cooler as the sun soaks up darker colors.
  • Avoid alcohol. Drinking alcohol dehydrates you and drinking in the sun amplifies this effect.
  • Use sunscreen, even on cloudy days. Just because the shine isn’t shining, it doesn’t mean that you still can’t get sun burned. Use sunscreen with a high SPF to minimize the chance of a burn.
  • Stay in the shade. Avoiding the sun on hot summer days is one of the best ways to make sure you won’t be getting sun burned. Find shade under a tree, an umbrella, or simply stay inside.
  • Use a fan. A simple oscillating fan can keep the air fresh and cool.

If you ever feel dizzy or lightheaded while outside, make sure you take a seat and rest until you feel comfortable. Heatstroke is a common symptom of people who push themselves too far and don’t take the proper precautions in hot weather.

Your health is everything. Make sure you take the simple precautions above to stay safe this summer as Minnesota experiences record breaking heat.

Amenities Enhanced Lifestyle

We wrote earlier about the benefits of an ownership community.  Amenities also contribute a lot to enhancing the Cardinal Pointe lifestyle.

The owners at Cardinal Pointe of Oakdale are a very active group.  Everything from Wii bowling leagues to Twins game outings and more.

There is also a Library in the building.  I call it an Honor Library.  You can check out a book and also donate books.  It must be honorable because the bookshelves are filling almost to capacity.  Besides being beautifully decorated, its a great place to read and also has a computer with internet access, copier and printer.

Woodworking Shop.  The shop is located in our heated underground garage which also has a popular car wash bay with all the necessary tools to wash and vacuum your car.  The shop is stocked with an abundance of power tools and regular tools.  We have to thank all of those guys who were downsizing from their house and didn’t want to sell their tools at a garage – instead they contributed them to the Cardinal Pointe woodshop.  They also know how to use them and are willing to help with any project.

Gracious Lobby.  Visitors will be impressed with Cardinal Pointe’s beautifully decorated lobby with its $10,000 grandfather clock, fireplace and tiffany lamps.

Sunroom/Solarium.  This is many people’s favorite amenity.  I call it the Sanibel Room because the decor is classic Florida seafoam painted walls, white wicker furniture and glass tables with sea shells and carved birds.  The 20 foot ceiling and windows all around are great anytime especially in the winter.

Cardinal Pointe has other amenities as well:  a well appointed Exercise Room with TV/stereo, Game room with billiards table, chess table and card table.  The Craft Room has layout tables, sinks, cabinets and a sewing machine.

Go to www.cardinalpointe.org for pictures and more.  You can tour the building and our model Monday – Thursday 11:00 – 3:00 or other times by appointment.  651-578-0650

Cardinal Pointe – A Resident Owned Community

A few years back I attended a real estate seminar covering the pros and cons of owning your home vs. renting.  He started his conversation by asking the large audience to raise their hand if they had ever rented a car.  Almost everyone raised their hand.  Next he asked for a show of hands from anyone who had ever washed the rental car.  Zero hands went up.  He said, “Do I need to say more?”

My experience over many years in real estate is that the quality of life is drastically better in ownership communities.

Everyone at Cardinal Pointe is an owner and member of the cooperative.

If you own your home, your payment can’t go up.  Your heat, electricity, etc., can go up – but those go up wherever you are.  If you rent, your payment is at the whim of the landlord.  Inflation is already starting and predicted to increase in the future.  Rents are up and vacancies are down.  You can bet landlords will raise the rent whenever they can.

Nobody likes to move – its a big hassle.  People in their 60′s, 70′s and beyond rarely move unless they are forced to.

Stay tuned to our blog for future information!
